Stop

What it is: These signs indicate that you must stop your vehicle before crossing the line at a marked line. In cases where there is no marked line anywhere within the vicinity, this indicates that your vehicle has to stop before entering the crosswalk or intersection.

Why it’s important to know: This helps you make a full stop even before you get on the crucial spot. Stopping at the right moment ensures that you will not bump into other cars while in the process of stopping before the marked space (if there are any). It also ensures that the pedestrians will be safe should they be frequenting the area.

No Parking

What it is: These signs indicate that you are not allowed to park your vehicle in the area.

Why it’s important to know: Some areas are not safe for still objects, such as a car. While some spots are reserved for someone else (in some cases, the area may be a vital location that may be conveniently used in emergency cases).

Yield

What it is: These signs indicate that you must yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic or pedestrians before proceeding.

Why it’s important to know: Some areas have higher levels of wheel and foot traffic, no matter the time of the day or day of the week it is. Therefore, it is in the best interests of both motorists and pedestrians if you will cut some slack and let the cars or pedestrians pass by if there are a significant number of them that needs to do so within a set period of time.

No Turn on Red Signs

What it is: These signs indicate that you are not allowed to make a turn at the intersection when the traffic signal is red.

Why it’s important to know: Some motorists may take the chance to make a turn instead when the stop light indicates red. While this is acceptable in some routes, this may increase the risks of having accidents and heavier traffic (aside from violation of traffic rules) in some roads. This sign is usually put up in routes that do not allow these turns to ensure that the situations mentioned will not happen (or at least have a lower chance of happening).

No Entry/Do Not Enter

What it is: These signs indicate that you are not allowed to enter the road or intersection.

Why it’s important to know: Some areas may be private property with the owners not keen on coming across random vehicles for some reason (usually because of safety concerns). Therefore, it’s law-abiding, respectful, and tactful to just take an alternative route so you can eventually arrive at your desired destination.

Railroad Crossing

What it is: These signs warn drivers of an upcoming railroad crossing and to be prepared to stop if a train is approaching.

Why it’s important to know: Knowing that you’re approaching a railroad crossing will help you make the necessary adjustments to decrease your driving speed and eventually stop when the need arises. In the process, it helps you reduce the risks of running into accidents and not reacting in time for the arrival of the train that will cross the railroad eventually.

Merging Road

What it is: These signs indicate that two lanes of traffic are merging into one and that you should yield to traffic in the other lane.

Why it’s important to know: Knowing that a merging road is up ahead will help you to physically and mentally prepare for the upcoming vehicles that are most likely coming from the opposite road. This eventually reduces the risk of running into accidents because of lack of awareness of an incoming vehicle from the other side.

Left Turn

What it is: These signs indicate that you are allowed to make a left turn at the upcoming intersection.

Why it’s important to know: Some roads may not allow left turns because it may cause heavy traffic or inconvenience on the part of other motorists, not to mention that turning towards that direction may cause a bottleneck that may lead to accidents.

Cross Road

What it is: These indicate that there is an upcoming crossroads or T-intersection.

Why it’s important to know: Multiple vehicles colliding from different directions is a possibility that may result in accidents and prolonged traffic. As a result, it can lead to disruptions not only to those directly involved in the accident but also to those who just need to pass through the road in question.

Speed Limit

What it is: These signs indicate the maximum speed limit that you are allowed to travel on a particular road or highway.

Why it’s important to know: This helps you keep in mind what the safe speed is so you can drive with minimal risks of getting into an accident.

Pedestrian Crossing

What it is: These signs indicate that there is a crosswalk ahead and that you should yield to any pedestrians who may be crossing.

Why it’s important to know: Aside from the road markings, this adds another layer of precautions to ensure that you will not run over people who just need to cross the road when the stop light indicates red. This also ensures that you can gradually apply your brakes early on.

Road Splitting

What it is: This indicates that the road will diverge into at least two parts after a few meters. Some signs under this variation also indicate the exact distance before the road will split.

Why it’s important to know: This is important because it helps you physically and mentally prepare for the diverging road. If you know the road will split and how far along before you reach that point, it will tell you when to stay in a certain lane so you will not disrupt traffic and get into unwanted situations, such as an accident.

Men at Work

What it is: This sign is indicative of the fact that a spot ahead may be full of people and equipment related to road construction and forms of work that will partly or fully block the road.

Why it’s important to know: This helps you figure out your next moves when it comes to the alternative routes you need to take. It also helps you anticipate how much traffic you need to deal with.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of road signs, but it should give you a good idea of what to look out for while you are driving. Pay attention to all road signs and obey them to help keep yourself and others safe on the road.
