Thai cooking with Withlocals.com

You haven’t traveled until you have eaten the food. This is what I believe when I travel. I’m glad I discovered Withlocals.com a few months ago. It lets you experience to dine and cook in a local’s house, it can’t get any authentic than that.

During our Bangkok trip, I made sure to book an experience with Withlocals. I chose the one offered by Predaphol “Cook like a local!”. Not only we get to have a hearty lunch of Thai dishes, we get to learn to cook a few Thai dishes. Upon booking, Predophol or Phoom as his nickname, sent the menu and asked if we have special requests. Jeff likes Green Chicken Curry so I specifically mentioned that. We scheduled our Thai lunch on our 2nd day in Bangkok, our host, Phoom, gave his number and kept in touch during our trip. He even waited for us at the BTS station Chong Nonsi near his restaurant i-Gourmet. Yes, this guy is a chef so you’re sure to have a delicious meal with him.

Khob khun ka, Roomorama

On our 6-day Bangkok trip, we used Roomorama for our apartment stay. We love using Roomorama because it gives us value for money. We can have a 5-star-hotel-like amenities but with the price of a guesthouse. I think I have evolved in our accommodation choices from years of traveling. Before, it’s okay for me to just book the cheapest room as long as it has a bed, airconditioning, and ensuite bathroom. Now, I have a lot to consider such as the location, how comfy is the bed, bathroom size, environment, nearest 7-Eleven or supermarket, security, room size, etc. I’m looking for a more comfortable stay but still within our budget. In Bangkok, there are a lot of affordable hotel accommodation to choose from, I’m so tempted to book a hotel in the Pratunam area so that I can go shopping any time of day. But I knew that Jeff won’t like the area that much so I looked for other apartments available in the site.

The Nest Apartment in Thailand

I found The Nest Apartment, located in a newly built modern condominium which is only $35 or 1,100 baht per night. Convert that to peso and it’s around Php 1,500. Look at the amenities we enjoyed for just Php 1,500.

City Center Hotel in Baguio

City Center Hotel is a new and modern hotel in Baguio City that is centrally located in Session Road. When I was looking for our hotel to stay in last Holy Week, I carefully searched for photos of hotels and their locations. Other Baguio hotels we stayed from previous visits are really old and rundown like the Harrison Inn (location is good too but very old). I was skeptical at first if City Center Hotel is really new because it’s in Session Road and that area is filled with old buildings. But I asked my friend who is based in Baguio and she confirmed that it’s indeed new. I booked via their website, they reply fast. You have to pay the room reservations in full though via bank deposit if you’re going to book in advance. After you wired the payment, send them an email with your deposit slip attached and they will send you a confirmation at once. Email correspondence is really fast and reliable.

Genesis Joy Bus to Baguio

Last Holy Week, my family went to Baguio for a 4-day vacation. My husband Jeff will climb the Kibungan Circuit in Benguet and he left ahead of us but he’ll meet us in Baguio after his climb. Jeff told me about his plan just a week before the Holy Week. I crammed on looking for our hotel in Baguio and reserving our tickets to Baguio. I was not surprised when I called Victory Liner in Pasay, Cubao and Caloocan, I asked if they still have tickets going to Baguio on Maundy Thursday, they told me that tickets are all sold out even their deluxe line and we can just line up on the day itself as chance passengers. I don’t want to take my chances so I looked for other bus lines with trips to Baguio. Luckily, I stumbled upon Genesis Joy Bus, the executive coach of Genesis Transport similar to deluxe lines of Victory Liner. And I’m doubly happy because I can buy our tickets online through http://iwantseats.com.ph/. I don’t have to go the Genesis terminal in Cubao just to buy tickets. I registered on the site, selected the Date of Trip and Number of Seats. Booking via IWantSeats is such a breeze, they have payment options such as Dragon Pay, BPI and Union Bank deposit. I paid via BPI and just called their hotline for payment confirmation after I deposited the money. The online booking shows the bus seat plan and you can select your seats too! Just book in advance so that you can choose the best seats. Bus fare from Cubao to Baguio via Genesis JoyBus is Php 675, plus additional Php 25 booking fee.
