Am I the last person here in the Philippines who is not aware about the craze on tuko or Tokay Gecko? I searched for Tuko for sale or Tokay Gecko for sale and I discovered that buying and selling of this reptile is very rampant. The selling price depends on the weight and the size of the head of the gecko. The bigger the size of the bigger the head, the bigger its selling price.
I remember my childhood days in our province in Aklan. My aunt’s house has 2 tuko (2 Tokay Geckos) inside her house and we would feed them with beetles (salagubang).
The Tokay Gecko or Toko is now drastically turning into a threatened species in The Philippines because of indiscriminate hunting due to it’s high fetching or selling price to Chinese buyers and other foreign buyers or pet traders. They say the Chinese have tapped into the Tokay’s medicinal properties to cure cancer.
I hope that this is just a fad and that people will stop illegal trade of this animal.
