Dulcelin’s Mango Torte

It was my mother’s birthday and I’m planning to buy her a cake that will suit her finicky taste. She doesn’t want her cakes too sweet, she doesn’t want so much toppings, she just want her cake simple, yet delicious. Estrel’s Caramel Cake would have been perfect at that time but when I called, all their cakes were sold out. I was told that I should reserve a day earlier since their cakes are made-to-order. And so I searched for another alternative, a friend suggested Dulcelin’s Mango Torte.

After reading some raves for their Mango Torte, I decided to drop by their store/house which is near my office in Quezon City. A small Dulcelin sign is posted in front of the house, one must order using the doorbell, tell what size you’re ordering and somebody will open the gate to give your orders. It’s like buying candies in a sari-sari store, only this time, you’re buying a Php 600 dessert, which claimed to be as one of the best Mango Torte in Manila.

For some “torte 101”:

A torte is a rich, usually multilayered, cake that is often made with very little flour and ground nuts or breadcrumbs, egg yolks, sugar and stiffly beaten egg whites. Tortes are filled with buttercreams, mousses, jams and other fillings. About.com

It was handed to us frozen, upon reaching the house, it never made its way to the freezer again because I had to give some to my nephew. The cream is runny when it’s not frozen and the cashew-based nougatine at the bottom part of the torte is difficult to slice. This is why I just put in a bowl whatever dollop of cream, mango and nougatine I scooped, so much for presentation.

I’m not a fan of creams and icings but I don’t mind the generous amount of cream in Dulcelin’s Mango Torte. But what I love the most is the cashew-based nougatine, it’s crunchy, sweet and nutty. If I have to make a hierarchy on what I love about it, it would be: nougatine, mango balls and cream. Dulcelin’s Mango Torte is definitely a must-try for dessert lovers.
