Running with an umbrella? Safety tips on running during the rainy season

We all know that rainy season is the time when all you want is to stay in bed and be a couch potato. Like me, all I want is to eat, sleep and stay inside the house. But for some health buffs, rainy season should not hinder you from working out. If you’re really determined to work out, you wouldn’t let nature get in your way to fitness. With this in mind, Jeff and I decided to resume our running stint in UP. The UP Academic Oval is runner-friendly and biker-friendly because a separate lane is dedicated for such activity. Unfortunately, on my last lap, rain poured and I was drenched because I can’t run fast enough to get to the parking area. I also saw players from the baseball field carrying their baseball bats, gloves, and batting equipment, the rain also ruined their practice. So what to do? Should you carry an umbrella while running?

No way! What you can do to ensure your safety when running is to make sure that your shoes have good traction. Tracks are slippery when wet. You can wear extra clothing like a waterproof jacket and jogging pants to keep you dry despite the rain. Lastly, pop your vitamin C to boost your immune system, you don’t want to catch a cold or a flu while you’re on your way to fitness.

Another option is to exercise indoors like in a gym and use the treadmill instead. Although it’s boring, nothing beats the fresh air and the rush that I feel especially when I see other runners along the tracks.

  2. It’s nice running and working out in nice weather. Although I’m not like that; but many people here in Vancouver don’t care if the weather is rainy or not. When it’s time for jugging, it’s time for jugging with rain or without. They have water proof clothes and as you said a good pare of shoes and there you go. But I see people running in the streets not on running tracks. (probably to avoid slipping) If you are not familiar with our weather, we have rain almost 10 months a year, even in summer we are lucky to have a month of sun without rain interruptions. Having a nice dry sunny weather is a blessing that everyone takes seriously, and tries to do some outdoor activity.

  3. Hi Anna, I should get inspiration from runners in your country. When it’s raining here, all I want is to sleep.

  4. Believe me I want to do the same thing or sit in front of fireplace and have coffee, but when it rains on and off for almost 10 months, you get used to it. And what else can you do life must go on!!!

  7. Instead of running with an umbrella you should just invest in a jacket or waterproof to run in. much safer and simpler!

  8. Hi guys, I have one doubt.

Is there any need to wear jacket or waterproof? because when we run our body heats up and wearing a jacket we cud feel much hotter. what say?
