My Yabu experience

Everybody is talking about Yabu! But this time around, I waited a bit longer and thought that maybe it’s just one of those overhyped promotion of a new restaurant. Heck, they already opened the second branch and the hype didn’t die down, so there must be something special about Yabu.

So when the opportunity came that we have to renew our passports at DFA Megamall, I know that it’s time to try Yabu.

The Yabu experience starts with grounding the black and white sesame seeds.

Crushing the sesame seeds initiates and preps your sense of smell.

Once the seeds were crushed and the aroma was released, pour 2 or 3 scoops of katsu sauce. It’s a feast for your eyes while you pour the sauce into the sesame seeds and stirring it.

You might as well take your time making the katsu sauce because orders arrive about 10-15 minutes.

First to arrive on our table was Jeff’s order, Chicken Katsu Curry. The set is Php 320, comes with unlimited Japanese rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, unlimited cabbage and a bowl of fruit.

Closer…

You can choose the spiciness of the curry sauce between regular, hot and very hot, Jeff chose the hot. I got to taste the curry sauce and it’s just the right amount of spiciness, provides a kick but you can still taste all the goodness of the curry sauce. If you’re a sauce-lover, then Katsu curry sets are for you. As for the chicken katsu, Jeff described it as crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

I had Yabu’s signature dish which is their Tonkatsu sets, I must admit I’m really curious about the Kurobota but that’s way expensive so I settled for the Rosu Tonkatsu Set (pork loin with fat trimmings).

Rosu Tonkatsu Set also comes with unlimited Japanese rice, miso soup, Japanese pickles, unlimited cabbage and a bowl of fruit.

Meet the star of the table…

Closer…

Crunchiness of the coating welcomes you upon biting the katsu slice, after that, the tenderness of the meat makes you appreciate and enjoy the gentle flavors of the pork. Once in a while, when you’ve had enough of the fat, munch on the cabbages, sip the miso or nibble on the pickles. After that, your tastebuds are again ready for that katsu crunch.

Servings at Yabu are big, the rice, soup and cabbage are unlimited but we weren’t able to have our second helping because we’re already full.

Dining at Yabu is a 360-degree experience, it’s not only about the perfect katsu. It’s the modern playful Japanese interiors, it’s the friendly vibe of the staff, it’s the hustle from the customers, and it’s the warm welcome of the store’s manager, Mon, that makes you coming back at Yabu.

So is Yabu just a hype? I say, experience for yourself =)
