Kuya J Halo-Halo Espesyal: Smooth and suave as Jericho Rosales

With the Philippines being a tropical country, the heat always make me feel like it’s summer season everyday. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that… but thanks to Kuya J Restaurant because its newest offering will help me breeze through the scorching heat all year long. I’m talking about Kuya J Halo-Halo Espesyal.

When it comes to halo-halo, I thought I’ve seen and tasted them all. Shaved ice, milk, leche flan, ube and a variety of toppings. But Kuya J Halo-Halo Espesyal is something else, truly Espesyal. What makes it “espesyal” is the paper-thin shaved ice that’s as smooth and suave as the restaurant’s endorser, Jericho Rosales.

I got to try Kuya J Halo-Halo Espesyal last Sunday during the Meet and Greet with Jericho Rosales at their SM Manila branch. The shaved ice is what really stands out, every spoonful is sweet and milky and instantly melts in my mouth. And I haven’t scooped out the ingredients yet.

On top reigns a thick chunk of homemade leche flan, sprinkled with crunchy corn flakes, and drizzled with ube bream. Once you dig in, you’ll be in for a treat of sweet and meaty macapuno strings, red and green nata de coco, caramelized saba, velvety ube jam, and glazed langka. I love it because it has all of my favorite halo-halo ingredients (and no beans!)

Aside from the halo-halo, we were served with Kuya J’s favorites too. Starting with Grilled Scallops and Lumpia Presko.

Each Grilled Scallops is creamy and buttery!

Lumpia Presko has sautéed crabmeat and bamboo shoots filling rolled in malunggay infused wrapper with sweet garlic sauce. This is one of my fave because it’s light and fresh, the bamboo shoots are so soft.

The Crispy Catfish is crunchy and well-seasoned with spices, served with chilli tuba and bagoong mayo sauce.

Kuya J’s Kare-Kare has that homemade taste, the peanut sauce is made from scratch that’s why you can really taste it’s nutty flavor.

The star of the table is Kuya J’s Crispy Pata, perfectly deep fried pork skin with tender juicy pata meat. This is Kuya J’s specialty so it’s a must try.

Meanwhile, I like my sisig crunchy and almost-shredded to bits that’s why I enjoyed Kuya J’s sisig.

All these Pinoy spread on our table wouldn’t be complete without rice. We had this Danggit Rice, it’s so delicious I can eat it alone, or maybe a two of three of these crunchy danggit too.

Kuya J still has lots of yummy Pinoy food on its menu and I’m excited for my next visit. Of course, Kuya J Halo-Halo Espesyal will be the perfect ending for all that mouthwatering and heartwarming dishes.

  6. Yung sisig nila, panalo! Yes, their halo-halo’s good. Medyo naumay lang ako dahil magkasunod na araw ko sya nakain. Also, Razon’s version remains holding the top spot in my book. 🙂
